The December 1985 issue of The Face (Volume 1, Issue 68) offered a vivid snapshot of mid-1980s culture, style, and media. The cover featured a striking image by Pierre Hurel, with contributions from photographers like Carrie Branovan and Andrew Macpherson. Inside, the magazine opened with its signature “Bulletin” section, followed by pieces on the London and Paris fashion collections, a cultural analysis of Miami Vice, a look inside the Groucho Club, and a profile of filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Features included a profile of Duran Duran titled “In the Belly of the Beast,” a retrospective on Sid and Nancy called “Love Kills,” and reflections on political, cultural, and design topics such as Jeffrey Archer, outside toilets, and the Womack family. It also included fashion spreads like “In Search of the Singular,” an early spotlight on John Galliano, and pieces on Swing Out Sister, Doug E. Fresh, and Morris Day. A feature on Susan Tully appeared under “Teenager in Love,” and the magazine explored themes of identity, celebrity, and emerging trends. Regular columns such as “Monitor” offered commentary on TV, music, film, and print from critics like Ian Penman, David Toop, and Jon Savage, reinforcing The Face’s role as a defining voice of 1980s youth and cultural commentary.
