The PHOTO Volume 7 (Issues 86-98)
The Photo (published by Marshall Cavendish in the UK, 1980s) was a weekly partwork series designed to be collected into bound volumes. It ran to multiple volumes (usually around 6–12 depending on the set) and was structured more like a practical encyclopedia of photography than a newsstand magazine. Each issue contained a mix of:
-
Practical guides – tutorials on using cameras, lenses, lighting, exposure, darkroom techniques, and early digital processes.
-
Thematic essays – explorations of genres such as portraiture, landscape, still life, reportage, and experimental photography.
-
Historical overviews – profiles of key photographers, movements, and milestones in photographic history.
-
Portfolio spreads – showcasing work by established and emerging photographers for inspiration.
When bound into hardback volumes, the series served as both a reference library and a visual anthology of photographic styles of the period. It was especially popular with hobbyists and students who wanted a structured, illustrated introduction to photography before the internet era.
